This is an extension of Portfolio Paper 1, so you must stay with the same topic.
For this assignment, we take a different approach to the social justice narrative by turning to more creative forms of writing. Social justice issues are emotionally charging, so creative writing can often move someone to think differently much quicker than a logical piece of writing. For that reason, we end our term by using the other side of our brain and going deeper into your chosen topic.
For this final assignment, please choose ONE of the following options:
- Short story - animating your social justice topic. I would suggesting reading a few if it has been awhile since you read a short story. It could be character focused or action driven, but either way it should communicate a clear statement about your topic through its descriptions, actions or dialogue. 8 - 12 pages in length.
- Autobiography - this can by your own story, OR maybe even more fun the story of a character that you create to represent the story you want to tell. It differs from a short story though, as it is written in the format of a biography - factual and straightforward. However, since you are creating this character and their history, this person should represent something important in the social justice realm AND provide insight to how you see this topic going (for example, an autobiography of a human rights attorney who represented families involved in the recent food processing raid - her success story could be she sued the government and won, providing the families enough security to care for their children and seek better jobs than they had at the plant). 4 - 6 pages in length.
- A ballad or song - again, animating your social justice topic. This should be structured around a rhythm and flow that would actually work if sang to a beat - and you can choose the genre of music you feel would be represent the story (pop song, opera, chant, etc).
No sources needed here, so no need to worry about citing! =-)
