To help you as you go to write and put together your Project 2: Final Paper, here is a template - Project 2 Final Paper Template SP20.docx Download Project 2 Final Paper Template SP20.docx. Feel free to download this and type (or copy) your work into each section; just make sure to remove the directions before submitting it!
Overall requirements for the paper:
- Make sure to Include the main heading for each part of the paper and bold it - this makes it easier to differentiate between the different parts of the paper.
- Everything (except the data dictionary) needs to be in sentence/paragraph format.
- Review the feedback you got on the previous Project 2 assignments and make any needed corrections. Your grade will be negatively impacted if you don't make recommended revisions/fixes.
Specific Requirements for each Section of the Paper
Title Page (should be on a new page)
List the title, your name, & course
Abstract (should be on a new page)
Brief 4-5 sentence summary of the project and what you found.
Introduction
(Same information as the Project 2: Introduction & Methods)
We based our Project 2 survey on the following Pew Research Center article/research - 7 Facts about Guns in the U.S Links to an external site.. Briefly (1 paragraph, 4-5 well-written sentences) summarize what the article the overall findings.
Include in the introduction which five questions from Pew we asked on our survey. For the five questions, explain if you think our survey results (all the data collected by the class) will be similar or different from the Pew Survey results. Do not provide the actual results from Project 2, just if you think our results will be the same or different for each question and why.
What do you hope to learn from doing this project?
Methods
Participants
Demographics - describe the sample population (this is for everyone, not just the 20 people you collected data from). Also, include the Minitab output (copy as PNG) for the information as an Appendix at the end of this assignment. Remember, you can find the Minitab data for this project on this page - Project 2: Data.
-
- Total number of people surveyed
- Gender (percentages for each group)
- Generation (percentages for each group)
- Political affiliation (percentages for each group)
NOTE: For the Minitab part of this, these are categorical variables so you would find the count (or tally) for each. The video explaining how to do this is the last one (Basic Minitab Analysis) on this page - Introduction to Minitab
Materials
- What materials were needed to collect this data?
- Include the Data dictionary - which questions were asked and the possible answer options. Note: Age was combined to make generation. This needs to be reflected and noted in your data dictionary. You can also put the data dictionary at the end in an Appendix as well if you want.
Procedures
- How did YOU collect your part of the data? Be specific, don't just say online or face-to-face. Provide the details.
- Summary of how OTHERS collected their data (this will come from this week's discussion). You don't have to say how every single person collected their data, but do a general overview of how the data was collected for the class.
- Include the exact percentage of the data that was collected online versus face-to-face. Do a count (tally) for this in Minitab.
Results
Statistical Analysis of the Data - In this section, you need to include three claims and their results - one for each of the categorical tests we covered. This is the same information as what you did for the following assignments: one proportion AND two proportion, & chi-square.
- Create a heading (under the Results heading) for the claim you are analyzing. Ex: One Proportion Claim, Two Proportion Claim, Chi-Square Claim.
- Write out the claim you are testing in the form of a hypothesis.
- Indicate whether your claim is the null or alternative hypothesis.
- Identify which statistical method is appropriate to use to test this claim and WHY.
- Use Minitab to analyze your claim and copy the Minitab output for that statistical test into your document. You can include this in the Results or as an Appendix. If you include it as an Appendix make sure to refer to it in the Results (Ex: See Appendix C for Minitab output) and label it in the Appendix (Ex: Appendix C: One Proportion Minitab).
-
Type out the appropriate statistics/information from the Minitab output that allows you to make a decision about your claim.
- One Proportion - Sample number, Sample percent, Z-score, P-value
- Two Proportion - Percentage for Sample ID's, Z score, P-value
- Chi-Square - Person Chi-square value, P-value
- Provide a conclusion that answers the original question/claim. Ex: There [IS, IS NOT] enough evidence to [Support, Reject] the claim that....[Retype the full original claim].
- Provide the real-world results of your conclusion.
- Is Follow-up needed? Why or Why not? [Only answer this question for the one proportion & two proportion tests, not needed for Chi-square]
-
If follow-up is needed, then do the follow-up and provide all the needed information.
- Follow-up claim
- Minitab Output
- Conclusion
- Real-world results
EXTRA CREDIT
Did you do the extra credit on the Project 2: Advanced Minitab Analysis assignment? If so, then go ahead and include that information as a subheading of the Results section. You won't get extra credit for submitting the same information twice, but it will add to the overall quality of your paper, which you do get credit for!
Discussion
This is where you wrap up what you found. This is also where you include your real-world meaning for each of your claims in addition to an overall what is the story of this data?
Briefly restate the real-world findings from each of your three claims. If you did the Extra Credit from last week, then include your findings from that here as well.
What was the overall story of our data? What does our data tell us? How does it compare to the Pew survey? Did any of these results surprise you or were you not expecting?
If you could change one thing about how we did this survey - that you think would have made it a better survey (in terms of our methods) - what would it be?
Play critical thinker and try to address any other potential issues someone might bring up against our survey.
Do you think our results can be generalized to a larger population and if so, what is that population?
Reference (should be on a new page)
Include the citation for the Pew Article and also feel free to do additional research or look up other sources if you'd like more information on the topic, just make sure to cite your sources!!). Include the full APA style citation Links to an external site. for all resources you used for this project
Appendix (should be on a new page)
Appendix A: Include the Minitab output from the Participants section. Also, make sure to refer the reader to "Appendix A" in the Participant section. [Ex: For full Minitab results see Appendix A.]
See the assignment rubric for specific grading information.
