A Transformative Research Experience for Marian University Students

The Marian University Undergraduate Summer Scholars Program is our premier undergraduate research opportunity, designed to give students hands-on experience in research, creative scholarship, and professional development. Whether you're interested in scientific discovery, fieldwork, creative projects, or interdisciplinary collaborations, this program offers an immersive summer experience that will challenge and prepare you for the next steps in your academic and professional journey.

Students from all majors and disciplines are encouraged to apply! Research is a high-impact educational practice that builds valuable skills, connects you with faculty mentors, and strengthens applications for graduate school, medical school, and competitive careers.

Throughout the summer, Scholars participate in a series of workshops and discussions designed to enhance research, communication, and career readiness:

  • Paid Research Experience – Receive a $2,600 stipend while conducting original research with a faculty mentor.
  • Career Exploration – Discuss graduate school vs. industry paths with faculty mentors and career advisors from The Exchange.
  • Professional Development – Participate in exclusive workshops and mentoring sessions to enhance your skills in research, data visualization, communication, and career planning.
  • Faculty Mentorship – Work one-on-one with a dedicated faculty mentor who will guide you through your project and provide valuable insight into your field.
  • Community of Scholars – Engage with a cohort of student researchers through discussions, presentations, and networking opportunities.
  • Presentation & Recognition – Share your research at the Summer Scholar Showcase and other campus-wide events.

Who is Eligible?

Summer Scholars applicants must be degree-seeking undergraduate students at any of Marian University's colleges/schools and campuses. Faculty members at all Marian University colleges/schools and campuses are eligible to serve as mentors.

Funding Information

The total financial award is up to $7,250 for each student:faculty pair as detailed below.

  • Student Stipend: $2,600
  • Project Support (supplies, travel, etc.): $1,000
    • Funds remaining after August 15 are forfeited without expressed written permission from the OUR.
  • Student Housing Support (if requested): $650
  • Faculty Stipend: $3,000
    • 12-month faculty members are not eligible for the stipend.

Program Timeline

Application Deadline: April 13, 2025 (extended from original deadline of April 6)

  • Submit your completed application and mentor recommendation to our@marian.edu by 11:59 PM on April 13, 2025.

Late April 2025: Application Review & Selections

  • An ad hoc committee will review applications and students will be notified of acceptance.

Late May 2025: Program Kickoff & Mentor Training

  • Accepted faculty mentors attend a mentor training workshop.

June 2025: Summer Scholars Program Begins

  • Students move into campus housing (if eligible) and begin their projects.
  • Welcome Lunch – Meet your cohort and learn what to expect.

June–August 2025: Research & Professional Development

  • Conduct research under the guidance of your faculty mentor.
  • Attend professional development workshops (see details below).
  • Engage in cohort discussions and interdisciplinary learning.

August 2025: Program Wrap-Up

  • Final presentations – Develop and deliver an elevator pitch summarizing your summer research.
  • End-of-summer celebration and networking lunch.

December 2025: Summer Scholar Showcase

  • Present your research to the Marian University community.

How to Apply

Students must submit an application that includes:

  1. Applicant Information
    • Name
    • Email
    • Major
    • Expected graduation year
    • Faculty research mentor name
    • Confirm if residence hall housing is requested
  2. Project Proposal (500 words max.)
    • Overview of the project, including research question(s) and methods.
    • Any prior research experience relevant to the project.
    • Explanation of how participating in the Summer Scholars Program will benefit your academic and career goals.
    • Description of how the project funds will be used (supplies, travel, etc.)
  3. Faculty Mentor Recommendation (500 words max.)
    • Mentoring plan for guiding the student’s research.
    • Explanation of how this project will contribute to the student’s growth beyond the classroom.
    • Confirm if a faculty stipend is requested.

Application Deadline: April 13, 2025 (extended from original deadline of April 6). All materials must be emailed to our@marian.edu before 11:59 PM on April 13, 2025. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.
