1.3 Assignment - Statutes & Regulations

Purpose

Being able to read statutes properly and understand administrative regulations as they apply to cases is a critical skill for paralegals. Practicing and applying these skills will further your understanding of the legal process.

Instructions

For this assignment, you will be completing the comprehensive case study in chapter 4 on page 114 for the School Bus-Truck Accident case described in Appendix 2 on page 483.  Review the case study and then research and determine areas of law that might impact this case, including statutes, administrative regulations, and issues for further case law research. It may be helpful to review the principles of statutory interpretation to make sure you read and interpret statutes correctly as you complete this assignment.

Grading Criteria

The assignment will be graded with the following criteria:

• Appropriate statutes identified impacting the case and a summary of why you feel the statutes are applicable.
• Appropriate regulations identified impacting the case and a summary of why you feel the regulations are applicable.
• Any other issues that may impact the case identified.
• Comprehensive research and analysis conducted in findings, including a summary paragraph of other considerations that may need further research.
